Skyward’s February Update Focuses on Pilots

Senior Product Director at Skyward

At Skyward, our goal is to make your commercial drone operations simple to manage, no matter how quickly you grow. From the feedback our customers have provided, we know that many of you are focused on launching and scaling your UAV programs and adding more pilots to your roster. So, for our February update, we’re giving you features to make it easy to manage your pilots.

Based on customer feedback, we also made an upgrade to the Skyward drone airspace map—our most popular feature—that enables you to pinpoint locations using several different coordinate systems.

Important: We’ll be taking the app offline at 5 p.m. PST for up to an hour while the updates go live.

Pilots Are the Key to Every Commercial Drone Operation

Every commercial UAV program depends on well-trained professional pilots. With Skyward, you can keep track of pilot training and flight hours and easily remove and add them to your organization. Admins have exclusive permission to add and remove pilots from an organization, but individuals can still make certain changes to their own accounts.

Pilot hours
Knowing how many hours each pilot has flown is essential for managing your ops and your training programs. It also gives you a record for insurers and regulators.

Now you can see the hours each of your pilots has logged for your organization on the Personnel screen:

Each pilot’s individual Personnel screen also shows the hours he or she has logged for a given organization.

For at-a-glance insights, you can also see each pilot’s logged hours in the Personnel box on your organization’s dashboard.

Also, please note that pilot hours now display in hours and tenths of hours. So if a pilot has logged 45 minutes, it will now display as 0.8.

Manage your pilots
We know that many commercial drone operations rely on contract or project-based pilots, so we’ve made it easy for organization admins to remove and reinstate pilots without having to reenter data. Only admins have the ability to mark a pilot as active or inactive.

Removed pilots will still be visible on the Personnel list, and you can add them back at any time:

The personnel count on your dashboard only includes active pilots. And if you’ve marked a pilot as inactive (even temporarily) he won’t see your organization in his list of organizations.

Map Update
You told us and we listened: You now have more options to find a location on the Skyward drone airspace map. You can simply type in an address, or you can use any of the following latitude/longitude formats to go right to the location you want:

  • DMS: 39°08’10.1″N 78°59’56.8”W
  • DMS: 38° 53′ 23″ N, 77° 00′ 32″ W
  • DD: 38.8897°, -77.0089°
  • UTM: 420651.0N087546.3W

Manage flights and document storage
We added usage gauges to your organization dashboard so you always know how many fights your organization has saved each month, as well as your document storage. Don’t worry if you go over your plan limits—you can continue using your account, and we’ll be in touch to discuss your plan options.
